Greenwood Cemetery is a predominantly African American cemetery located at 4014 Hale Ave. in Louisville, Kentucky, and is approximately 22 acres in size. The Cemetery currently is under the auspices of the Office of the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The National Association of Black Veterans (hereinafter “NABVETS”) has been specifically granted a right of entry to the Cemetery and is an active participant and contributor to Greenwood.
Without ownership responsibility for several decades, the cemetery has deteriorated to a state of disrepair and neglect. It is now overseen by the Attorney General’s Office and NABVETS.
As family and friends often come to the cemetery to pay their respects to their loved ones buried there. They often must find their way through tall grass and brush to access the grave site.
For over a decade, volunteers have worked to maintain the Cemetery as best they could by cutting grass, removing fallen trees and trimming around headstones. Volunteers include people who live in the area of the Cemetery; people who have relatives buried in Greenwood; community organizations, and churches and people recruited by the late Judge Sean Delahanty for whom restoration of the cemetery was a beloved passion
A volunteer began recording names and dates from each gravestone in November 2020 to document grave locations and create an informal map of the Cemetery. To date she has recorded over 3,700 graves including over 900 graves of veterans. In the past year she has received assistance from another dedicated volunteer in this effort. The Filson Historical Society in Louisville and the University of Louisville have some maps and records for Greenwood Cemetery, but they are not up-to- date. There is no known complete charting of the graves at the Cemetery.
Our principal guiding the actions and efforts of the Greenwood Cemetery Community Partners is:
