Volunteer: Special Event Volunteers

Every year LYG has a number of volunteer opportunities that are not part of our regular schedule. If you'd like to stay up-to-date on all of our volunteer experiences as they grow and evolve, email: Volunteer@louisvilleyouthgroup.org

Pasta Dinner and Talent Show

Every spring our youth work together with staff and volunteers to plan and host LYG's annual Pasta Dinner and Talent Show. This is the community's favorite LYG fundraiser and it requires a lot of hands working together to make it happen. Keep your eyes and ears open to find out how to support this event each year.

Pride Festivals & Events

LYG participates in all of Kentuckiana's major Pride events. Each year we encourage volunteers and supporters to march in parades, represent LYG at events, and help plan and run the Family Zone.

Queer Prom

Every Spring, LYG throws a "Silent Disco" Queer Prom for LGBTQIA+ and Allied folks. We always need a strong setup team, engaging chaperones, activity leaders, and a clean up crew.

Glitter Gala

The Glitter Gala is LYG's annual 21+ fundraising event. LYG is dedicated to featuring local Queer artists and performers, supporting local businesses, and celebrating the work of LYG and the people who make that work possible. LYG invites volunteers to join the Gala planning committee, or to help manage logistics the day of the event.

Empowerment Camp

Each Fall, LYG takes 60 LGBTQIA+ youth on a weekend trip to offer them the opportunity to build stronger relationships, develop their leadership skills and experience nature. There are a lot of pre-camp errands and tasks that volunteers can support, and we're always looking for reliable volunteers to be camp counselors. (Counselors need to pass a background check and do a short training with our program team before leaving for camp)

NYE Youth Lock-in

NYE is the perfect night for an overnight party. LYG offers youth a safe, and fun filled night to celebrate the New Year! LYG can always use help preparing for the lock-in, and we always need chaperones to spend the night. (Chaperones need to pass a background check and do a short training with our program team before the lock-in)

Volunteer: Saint Vincent de Paul

Open Hand Kitchen

The Open Hand Kitchen at 1026 South Jackson St. serves free meals to shelter clients as well as the poor and working poor in our community.

They are open 365 days a year, serving two nutritious meals each day, at 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. The cafeteria-style dining room offers guests an entrée, vegetables, salad, dessert, bread, and beverage.

St. Vincent de Paul Louisville’s Open Hand Kitchen opened in October 1983 in St. Paul Catholic Church at 1026 South Jackson St. The Open Hand Kitchen relies heavily on dedicated groups of volunteers, who serve two meals a day – at noon for lunch and 5pm for dinner – to anyone in need, no questions asked. Each year, the Open Hand Kitchen serves more than 90,000 meals.

Food Pantry

The Food Pantry is open from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is fully staffed by volunteers and offers canned goods, proteins, pasta, shelf-stable beverages as well as frozen foods including meat, poultry, and fish. Fresh produce is also available year-round. In 2022, with the price of groceries largely increasing, the Food Pantry served an average of more than 650 households monthly.

With support from Dare to Care Food Bank, St. Vincent de Paul’s Food Pantry opened in July 2014, serving residents in one of Louisville’s poorest neighborhoods.

Volunteer: Refugee Donation Room Reorganization

When a refugee family is resettled through Catholic Charities, they come to our location to receive the things they need from our room of items donated by the community. Our current space is like a warehouse: all of our incoming and outgoing donations are in one space, and it makes for an overwhelming experience for clients already acclimating to a totally new country. Still, we want to give clients the dignity to pick out items like household goods and clothing for themselves. By redesigning the donation room, clients will have their own space to “shop.” Staff will spend significantly less time sorting through donations and more time directly helping clients.

We will be moving the shopping space to another building on our campus and want it to be a dignified “store-like” experience for our clients. Our student group will help us to move the items and the needed accessories to the new building. The old space will be used as a place to efficiently sort donations that will eventually be given to clients.

Volunteer: Refugee Apartment Set Up

We will hopefully have lots of refugee arrivals in April! While I do not have specific dates yet, I will update this opportunity when I have specific dates/times for refugee apartment set ups.

As part of our work for refugees at Catholic Charities, we find and set up housing for newly arrive families and individuals. In order to make sure our clients feel welcomed, safe, and happy as they arrive to Louisville we make sure their housing is completely ready for them when they arrive. This takes volunteers to help make beds, set up kitchens/bathrooms, carry in furniture, etc. so our clients are settled in places they can call home!

Volunteer: Attend Dances with Veterans & Families

Dancing Well: The Soldier Project holds uplifting "old-time" dances for Veterans and their families impacted by PTSD or brain injury. Dances are taught and led by a professional dance leader. Excellent professional musicians provide live music. Refreshments are served and a safe environment encourages socializing. Veterans may come alone or with family or friends. Family members may come without their Veteran. Smiles abound and, over time, community forms. An empirical study published in a peer-reviewed journal found that Veterans with PTSD who participated in the program experienced highly significant improvement in wellness in even a short time. Volunteers are needed to attend the dance events. You may partner a Veteran in dancing. You may sit with a Veteran and provide a caring, listening ear. You may play with a child. You may oversee the registration table or assist with set-up or tear-down of the hall. If you have a positive disposition, can set aside your own cares for 90 minutes and be there for others, we want to hear from you. All genders are needed. You may be able to bring your own family with you. Location of events is confidential, so please phone the Executive Director Deborah at 502-889-6584 for details. Please tell others about us. We love to welcome new Veterans, family members and loved ones, as well as volunteers to our sweet little community. Get ready to have sore cheeks from smiling so much! This may be the most fun you can have volunteering!

Volunteer: Index Videos for New YouTube Channel

Dancing Well: The Soldier Project is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to uplifting military veterans and their loved ones, affected by PTSD or brain injury. At this time, some of our programs are held online. One of these programs is a weekly dance party held on Facebook Live. We have videos of these events, which are 45 – 60 minutes each. Each party includes a welcome, a warmup, simple dances taught and led, a break when we sing a song, and a few minutes of uplifting words or sharing a coping mechanism. We have set up a YouTube channel for our edited videos but lack an index to each video. Videos show a counter as they play. We would like to have each video viewed and noted for the exact count location for each item on the video. We will supply an outline of the contents on the video. What we need is exactly where each thing can be found. We will use these to have a professional create an index, so if someone is looking for a specific dance, they can click to access it. The first video indexing would take the longest, but with experience volunteers will be able to judge appropriate times and then move forward or backward from there, locating precise times faster. Volunteers can donate as few or many hours as they wish, as we now have about 120 videos to index. The final product may result in nationwide viewing by veterans/families coping with challenges.

Volunteer: Best Buddies Adult Friendship Program

Best Buddies Friendship programs represent one of our organization’s four key mission pillars.  These programs build one-to-one friendships between people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), offering social interactions while improving the quality of life and level of inclusion for a population that is often isolated and excluded. Through their participation, people with IDD form meaningful connections with their peers, gain self-confidence and self-esteem, and share interests, experiences and activities that many other individuals enjoy.

The Best Buddies Citizens program supports the development of friendships between adults with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in corporate and civic communities. Many people with IDD have limited opportunities for social interactions after they leave the school environment. This program helps people with IDD become part of mainstream society and creates an inclusive and diverse community for all.

If you are a person without a disability that is looking to make a new friend, this is the volunteer opportunity for you!
