Volunteer: Attend Dances with Veterans & Families

Dancing Well: The Soldier Project holds uplifting "old-time" dances for Veterans and their families impacted by PTSD or brain injury. Dances are taught and led by a professional dance leader. Excellent professional musicians provide live music. Refreshments are served and a safe environment encourages socializing. Veterans may come alone or with family or friends. Family members may come without their Veteran. Smiles abound and, over time, community forms.

An empirical study published in a peer-reviewed journal found that Veterans with PTSD who participated in the program experienced highly significant improvement in wellness in even a short time.

Volunteers are needed to attend the dance events. You may partner a Veteran in dancing. You may sit with a Veteran and provide a caring, listening ear. You may play with a child. You may oversee the registration table or assist with set-up or tear-down of the hall.

If you have a positive disposition, can set aside your own cares for 90 minutes and be there for others, we want to hear from you. All genders are needed. You may be able to bring your own family with you.

Location of events is confidential, so please phone the Executive Director, Deborah, at 502-889-6584 for details.

Please tell others about us. We love to welcome new Veterans, family members and loved ones, as well as volunteers to our sweet little community.

Get ready to have sore cheeks from smiling so much! This may be the most fun you can have volunteering!

March through May dates are set. Dates approximate/TBD for June through the end of the year.

Her passion for cooking began while working at a childcare center, where she saw how a thoughtful meal could spark joy, build connection, and bring comfort. Drawn to the mission of Ronald McDonald House, Melissa is honored to serve families during difficult times by preparing meals that feel familiar, welcoming, and made with heart.

Volunteer: Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)

YOU can help change a child’s story as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). At any given time, 150–200 children in our region are waiting for a trained CASA volunteer to be assigned to their case. Through no fault of their own, these children have experienced abuse or neglect and are involved in the family court system. They need a consistent, caring adult—someone like you—to serve as their voice in court, in school, and with service providers, ensuring their best interests are heard and protected.

For more than 40 years, CASA has served children in Jefferson County, and our service area has grown to include Bullitt, Henry, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer, and Trimble Counties.

CASA volunteer advocates must be 21 years of age, complete an application and interview, and pass background checks. Volunteers come from a wide range of personal and professional backgrounds. CASA of the River Region now offers streamlined, flexible training options designed to fit a variety of schedules, making it easier than ever to get started. Our staff provides comprehensive training, ongoing guidance, and continuous support so you feel confident and prepared in your role.

After initial training, CASA volunteers typically devote 1–4 hours per week to their cases.

Volunteer: Donate Books to Metro United Way's Little Free Libraries!

Because we know access to books is a leading indicator of a child’s success in school, we build, maintain, and fill a network of 42 Little Free Libraries. Since installing the first libraries in 2015, we’ve distributed 200,000 books. These libraries provide free and easy access to books for children and families who may live a distance from public libraries or lack convenient transportation. We can use your support to help keep the libraries full! You can donate new or gently used books to ensure that everyone who visits the libraries has books.

Books can be dropped off to Metro United Way Monday-Friday 9am-4pm. Please email Dulce Solorio (dulce.solorio@metrounitedway.org) to coordinate a drop off time.

WHAT TO DONATE:

Books for children, youth and adults that are in good condition.Books written by and about people of color. Seeing themselves in books helps children with the vital skill of reading with comprehension and establishes an affinity with reading – the more children enjoy reading, and find meaning there, the more they will come back to books.

WHAT NOT TO DONATE:

Large books (they don’t fit in the libraries)Textbooks, encyclopedias, dictionaries, guidebooks, out of date texts, etc.Torn, water-damaged, moldy or dirty/dusty books Magazines, newspapers, etc. Romance novels

WHO WE ARE

The mission of the IRC is to help people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster, including the climate crisis, to survive, recover and gain control over their future. The IRC will put in place high-impact, cost-effective solutions that help people affected by crisis. We'll also use our learning and experience to shape humanitarian policy and practice in ways that improve the lives of more people worldwide. And in all of our work, we will focus on breaking down each of the barriers faced by women and girls.

WHAT WE DO

The International Rescue Committee provides opportunities for refugees, asylees, victims of human trafficking, survivors of torture, and other immigrants to thrive in America. Each year, thousands of people, forced to flee violence and persecution, are welcomed by the people of the United States into the safety and freedom of America. These individuals have survived against incredible odds. The IRC works with government bodies, civil society actors, and local volunteers to help them translate their past experiences into assets that are valuable to their new communities. In Louisville and other offices across the country, the IRC helps them to rebuild their lives through initiatives for economic wellbeing, education, empowerment, health, safety, and overcoming barriers for women and girls.

Volunteer: Circles of Support and Accountability (CoSA) - Volunteers Needed

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!   CoSA is a group of 5-7 volunteers dedicated to community building by assisting individuals aged 12-24 at a high risk (core member) of involvement in the justice system by providing friendship and support. The goal of CoSA is to improve individual well-being and reduce the risk of further involvement in the justice system. CoSA is grounded in Respect, Tolerance, Responsibility, Accountability, and Loving kindness.   Volunteers who join the CoSA process are dedicated to learning about the core member's needs, strengths, and risk factors. Through open and honest dialogue, the core member is guided to identify goals and personal priorities, as well as develop and maintain a relapse prevention/self-management plan. Our volunteers also take an active role in helping the core member address their practical needs, especially in the early months of the CoSA. They strategize ways to secure income, housing, or any other resource the core member may need to thrive in the community. This process ensures that the core member receives the necessary support, understanding, and tools to transition back into the community successfully.
