Who We Are
Coordinated by volunteers and shepherded by Sr. Mary Kathleen Sheehan, St. John Center (SJC) opened its Day Shelter doors in 1986 in the decommissioned St. John Catholic Church to address the lack of services and safety during the day for people experiencing homelessness, after leaving overnight shelters and encampments in Louisville.
Today, SJC addresses homelessness by meeting people exactly where they are through 3 programs: The Day Shelter and Social Services Center, Street Outreach, and Permanent Supportive Housing.
SJC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

What We Do
SJC's mission is rooted in human dignity and a philosophy of Housing First, which places housing as the priority for the people we serve.
Our 3 programs collaborate to help people experiencing homelessness address the barriers to housing and self-sufficiency so they can leave homelessness for good.
Volunteers continue to be the heart of SJC's day shelter, working hands-on in welcoming and providing services to our guests, with dignity.
